Haley Update 06/03/10

Hi everyone,
Haley is doing well after her surgery this morning. Her right eye was removed and replaced with a prosthesis. The prosthesis was attached to the muscles which will allow the brain to move it in sync with her left eye.

Initially, the surgeons planned to do several other procedures during surgery but they changed their minds. In about a month, she will receive the overlay with the painted iris. This overlay is similar to a really big contact lens. The doctor will show her how to insert, remove, and care for it. I'm not sure when they plan to address opening of the right eye lid and tuck the bottom left lid.

I checked in with Trent late this afternoon. He said Haley was sitting up for the first time today and eating chicken noodle soup. She had a tension headache in the back of her head and neck. She said to tell me that her eyeball and balleye both hurt. One thing is for sure - she is dealing with this with true Haley humor.

Over Memorial Day weekend, she developed an infection in the skin around her left eye causing swelling and redness. Her doctor called in an antibiotic and asked her to come on Tuesday, 06/01/10 so he could take a look. He told her the infection isn't good but it's not horrible.

They were able to stay in the family friend's condo downtown from Tuesday through tonight. Brad and I spent time with them there Tuesday night and had take out sushi. It was wonderful hanging out and telling "remember when" stories over dinner. Trent is of course still doing an awesome job of taking care of her every need.

She is very grateful and excited about the yard and bake sale on Saturday, June 12th, in Corinth. Don't forget to let us know if you have items you want to donate.

Good night,
Christie
